Starting at the beginning of 2023, I was invited by Maryann Gibbons, the founder of Artypants Magazine, to develop the visual identity for the magazine, and to guide the overall brand direction as we worked up to the launch of issue 01, which was released in the fall of 2023!

Artypants Magazine is “a paper portal that transports your mind, senses and spirit to a place your soul already knows". It features New England-based creatives, and shares their perspective on how they both approach and view the creative process. The magazine provides readers with creative prompts, and rituals to encourage dormant creativity to flow.

What does it mean to be creative, and how might we ignite that in others?

The act of “being creative” goes way beyond creating an oil painting, or finishing a ceramic pot—creativity lies within our ability to approach everyday challenges with curiosity, patience and willingness to share our collective experiences, and reflect on them.

Often times the idea of perfectionism, or the notion that you need to identify as a creative person in order think creativity, or take on a new craft gets in peoples’ way of doing so. Artypants was created to enable and empower readers to tap back into their own creativity, and freely explore its potential.

Brand foundations & position

Before diving into visual exploration, Maryann and I discussed the brand’s core values and intentions to ensure that we were positioning Artypants in such a way that supported it’s mission—activating creative dormancy.

Brand Identity

From the core understanding of what Artypants stood for, and the overall feel we wanted to achieve, we began to express the concept through an identity that struck a balance between editorial, funky, and nostalgic.

The evolution of the bell bottom ‘A’

We were excited about the idea of morphing a literal pair of pants with a capital ‘A’ when dreaming up the brand’s logomark.

A variety of treatments were explored—ranging from geometric and sharp, to long, swoopy curves.

Core Colors

Funky, bright, and nostalgic were the core drivers behind the color palette, and it was important that each have a name inspired by the natural world.

Issue 01 Launch

Issue 01 was officially debuted and celebrated at Heyday Supply in Plymouth, Massachusetts in November of 2023.

Over 200 copies of Issue 01 have beens sold to date, and were are actively working on Issue 02 to be released in June of 2024!
