How might we create a home maintenance experience that is personalized, dependable and guided?

Amica was looking to revamp their HomeCheck app with the goal of designing an experience that empowered their user base to gain a more holistic understanding of their home.

From first-time home buyers, to seasoned real-estate veterans, the HomeCheck app was meant to support users who were invested in maintaining the value of their home, taking inventory of their personal assets and tracking connected home devices.

Defining User Personas

Who is using HomeCheck, and what motivates those users?

Amica came to us with a solid understanding of who their users were, but we worked together to define user goals, motivations and needs when it came to elevating HomeCheck’s digital experience. The user groups to decided to focus on were:

01—The Seasoned Vets
02—The Insurance-Bundlers
03—The Risk-Takers

UX Evaluation

How can we improve the current HomeCheck experience as a whole?

We worked with Amica to perform an in-depth audit of the their current HomeCheck app. evaluating each workflow through the lenses of:

01—Accessibility
02—Screen Real Estate Usage
03—Cognitive Load
04—Visual Consistency
05—Functional Consistency
06—Workflow Continuity

Early Concept Development

What are the main tasks that users are looking to accomplish with HomeCheck?

We worked with Amica to define the user needs for the next generation of their home check app, and proposed 4 key scenarios to test with their current user base.

Concept 1—Plan Your Projects

Concept 2—Clarify Your Priorities

Concept 3—Coverage Measure Up

Concept 4—Get to Know Your Home

Concept Refinement

How can we shape the next generation experience?

After getting user feedback on the 4 use scenarios, we took the top-rated features to create one master concept, with a higher level of detail, considering high-level navigational structures.

Master Concept—Manage Your Home Tasks & Budget

Gamification Strategy

How might we design an experience to help shift users’ home care habits?

Historically, home maintenance hasn’t been the most glamorous of tasks, but regular home maintenance will help uphold the value of one’s home in the long-run.

We worked with the Amica team to explore gamification opportunties within their “missions” tab in their app.

Home Dashboard

How might we visualize home to-do’s and other high level stats?

The HomeCheck home dashboard served as a reminder of what needed to be done in the user’s home, keeping in mind seasonality, time of day and task urgency.

The goal was to have the interface feel friendly, personalized and relevant. We didn’t want the user to feel like their list was never-ending.

What is the future of the home dashboard?

In the ideal sense, we were dreaming up ways for users to fully personalize their home in the app. They would have the ability to simulate the unique characteristics of their home as living and breathing avatar, customizing the exterior and interior features of their space.
